I
have been working as a fine artist for 35 years and in the
realm of public art for 23 years. In this time I have had
the opportunity to work all over the world and in a myriad
of situations. My exterior works exist in the equatorial heat
and dampness of Singapore to the sub zero temperatures of
Minnesota and all steps in-between. These radical environmental
situations have necessitated that I learn to build and install
to the unique nature of each situation. My studio builds,
ships and installs all of the work that I design. It is the
only way I have been able to insure that work of an unusual
nature is correctly treated.
I
understand that the above information is not directly applicable
to an interior lighting situation but this experience has
afforded me great opportunity in problem solving, the uses
of exotic materials and designing for the most difficult
situations.
My
attitude about lighting fixtures as art elements is that
it is the easiest way to introduce light as a creative material
to people who normally dont venture into the fine
art world.
My
fine art work is about energy, light and humor. Light is
the material of our visual experiences. We know it as an
abstract material. This prelingusitc knowledge is a very
important component in understanding why artworks composed
of light penetrate peoples barriers of abstract art
and ideas.
My
fine art work shares little with the public art. It is clearly
delineated and never confused.
